I would say my greatest accomplishment was achieving the status of a guide dog handler. The freedom, mobility, and independence is unmatched in my journey of being self-sufficient. Having my amazing Guide dog Kinley, has been such a 180 from my life before I met her. Some people may say that getting a guide dog is just another mobility tool. But Kinley is so much more to me than just a tool. She is my eyes, part of me. She has become an extension of my left hand. She is the one who is by my side day and night. Is taking care of a Guide dog hard, yes. But I wouldn’t want it any other way if it means getting to experience the feelings and advanced mobility that I am experiencing now. I truly didn’t know I could experience such love and admiration for an animal. Not until I met her. Every day I am in awe with her impeccable Guide work and obedience. and the amount of love and smiles she brings to so many people is beyond heartwarming. She’s not just a light to my life. But when people see her, they can’t help but give her a warm smile. entering into this new chapter of my life has been one of the most exciting and terrifying experiences yet. But having her by my side, makes every experience and moment that much more memorable. There could be 1 million and one reasons that I can give as to how I have become so much more confident and independent. But that would mean that I would continue on forever. My Guide dog Kinley has forever, changed my life and given me a new perspective. I thank her and the school who trained her for giving me half of my world back. After experiencing vision loss, it felt like I had lost part of me. After receiving Kinley, I feel complete. A sense of determination and purpose is given to me every time I have the handle in my left hand. And for that I have many to thank.
